I guess it’s time to relate what happened in Colorado. On Day 1, I did a back flip in my wheelchair and hit my head. I didn’t think anything of it. I was wearing a helmet and I have a hard head. It didn’t even bother me until the afternoon of Day 2 when I got real tired. I skied like a rookie and made some rookie mistakes. I had to ski from the top of the mountain all the way down but I made it with some rest stops. That’s when I figgered I had a concussion. Didn’t ski the next two days and the last day, I hung out the Do Not Disturb sign and slept all day.
It snowed that night and when I got up they had shoveled the snow from outside the rooms (they all open outside) and put the excess snow where the exits to the street above the hotel was. There was no way I could make it to the lot where my car was parked from the front of the hotel trying to get up a steep hill with the snow. I went down to the desk and told the dude on duty about that. He kept calling maintenance with no luck. The guy prolly took a nap after shoveling the snow. So, he asked me where my car was and got it for me. He cleaned all the snow off of it. Then he fetched my luggage from my room and loaded my car. By this time, the car was nice and warm. I tipped him $20.
I had a decision to make. Should I go to the hospital or drive home. If I went to the hospital I might be in Aspen for a while and Ryan might have to come and get me. I got to the bottom of the hill. Right turn – hospital. Left turn – home. I chose home.
I gassed up in Glenwood Springs and got my Mickie D’s coffee and hit I-70. It wasn’t too bad until I got behind the snowplows at Vail Pass. By the time I got to the Eisenhower Tunnel it wasn’t too bad and after going through the tunnel it wasn’t bad at all. It was still cold. In the low teens. I made it to Kansas before having to gas up again and stopped at Hays Kansas. I got a good night’s sleep.
When I got up the next morning it was cold. It was dark when I left Hays. After a while I saw what looked like city lights blinking on and off all at the same time. WTF? As I got closer, I realized it was a big wind farm. I was glad I had plenty of gas so it would warm up before I had to gas up again. Wrong! The temperature kept dropping. When I finally gassed up it was 6 degrees and the wind was blowing. Froze my ass off. Driving through Kansas City I listened to sports radio and heard the fans saying they should fire Andy Reid because KC lost to the Patriots. Let’s see, the Chiefs lost by one touchdown to a superior team with a better quarterback on the Patriots’ home field. I know a lot of teams that would kill to make the playoffs. Teams like the Detoilet Lions. No playoff wins since the NFL/AFL merger. KC had had some snow and some of the bridges were a bit icy. Did a nice skid on one of them. Anyway, I made it all the way to Mt. Vernon Illinois on that tank of gas. It was 9 degrees and I had to gas up freezing my butt off again.
The next morning I took off glad I was heading South so it would finally warm up again. When I gassed up in Tennessee it was in the 30’s. Listening to the radio there was some dumb black activist in Chattanooga bitching about gentrification on MLK Boulevard. Seems it was turning white and she didn’t like that. She wanted it to be a black slum like MLK streets throughout most of the country. What a dumb holiday. What did the dude do? He led some protests and made a speech. Fifty years later what is the state of black America? Worse. As for that being judged by content of character over skin color? It’s skin color all the way.
I made it home safe. I did a lot of sleeping. I’m feeling much better but I still have some recovery time. Alas! I won’t be going back skiing next month. I need to give my head plenty of time to heal. Also, this is my last solo ski trip. From now on, I go with Ryan and Sherry.
I figger’d something was up with the lack of posting and brevity in replies. Just glad you’re doing better now, Denny.
Be careful with the concussion symptoms. Might wanna come up to speed on long-term effects on cognition, memory, and mood.
Only way you can actually monitor those is by having someone else you can trust determine if any significant changes are apparent. Bad part is that they sometimes take weeks to manifest; good part is that often they can be treated successfully if properly diagnosed.
I read an article a few months ago on memory disruption from brain banging. Seems that in older adults those three feature — cognition, memory, and mood — can be easily misdiagnosed as Alzheimer’s.
Don’t remember the stats on it, and can’t remember where I found the article, but I recall that it was published under the auspices of one of the big research facilities, such as Sloan-Kettering or Mayo or UCLA or one of those.
Bon chance, mon frere.
Started doing memory checks and simple physical stuff like touching my nose with eyes closed.
Denny,
I like most figured something was amiss & am glad you are coming around . I know you are stubborn but driving home without getting a medical evaluation was a foolish thing to do .Probably your concussion contributed to that choice but please do not take a chance like that again, you are a one of a kind dude & none of us want to lose you.
Given what happened I would suggest you touch base with your favorite doctor & see if he thinks an evaluation is still in order…just saying my friend!
NEWS FLASH! I just read on Drudge that Thunder Rodent Thigh`s had a coughing fit out Iowa way & it spoiled her BS speech. Scuttlebut has it Huma got the blame because Hillary damn near choked to death on some of her carpet hairs….I guess you just should never mix business with pleasure! I hope Huma has better luck next time!
WOW Denny that sounds serious and you need to rethink future physical stuff like that.
My physical frolicking is limited to a 2 mile drive to an unmarked building where a hot babe gives full body massages and guarantees a “Happy ending” even if she has to use a wooden spoon to fire your prostate.
Well that and an occasional trip to see DDP. She doesn’t need a wooden spoon. Her years of training in Asia on the knowledge of how to satisfy a man and a loving smile does the job very well.
Be careful, stay safe and deliver a nice babe with medium sized boobs, small aureoles and 4 inch erect nipple. Oh yea, make it a full body, totally naked blonde with killer legs.
Forget all that advice and go see the movie Concussion.
As the rest of the crew says: Don’t fuck with concussions.
Medicalville sucks. I wish I didn’t know that. But it’s marginally better than having your brain turn to mush. I wish I didn’t know that, either.
Other than that, welcome home.
Take care of yourself Denny like the rest of the posters here are saying concussions should not be treated lightly. On another note it is doggone shame about the Detroit Lions. My family was from Michigan, still have sister living there. Lion fans from way back. If only they could be in the playoffs or win a superbowl, that would be nice.
You and AlphaDelta. He sez that won’t happen until someone other than the Ford family owns the team.
I may be off on my reasoning but, one playoff win in 58 years, which happened 26 years ago, a perfect 0-16 season, and the only non-expansion team to not only never won but, never been to a Super Bowl, may have a little something to do with my beliefs about the Ford family.
I would have a hard time arguing that one with you AlphaDelta. You make a valid point there. To bad, I do not see change on the horizon anytime soon.
Ya, had the Lions new GM Bob Quinn, from New England, immediately fired coach Jim Caldwell, Diversity (All Hail Diversity!) whose claim to fame is his 26-63 record at Wake Forest, and this epic display of his coaching ability: https://youtu.be/vOcZhoZoWOE
Well, I might’ve changed my gut opinion about the organization and, the Ford family, however, Detoilet is now just as steady as the Lions have historically always blown.
Driving east on I70 at night near Hays for the first time usually gets the what are those lights question. Interesting story about connecting those wind mills to the electric grid, originally plan was a coal fired plant in western KS and they would build a transmission line east and the wind mills were to connect in. Well the gov said no coal fired plant sebelius(sp?) was gov, and the wind millers got the tax payers to pay, with the gov approval. Don’t you just love dems.
Denny, like the others have said, don’t mess with a bang. (on the head) Get yourself checked out. I had my head examined once but they didn’t find anything.
Watch your email…more boobage is on the way!
Lots of people tell me concussions are a real pain in the ass, but I figure they failed Anatomy 101 in school.
No, Toejam. You have to allow for diversity.
There are a lot people who get concussions when their heads are up there.
They’re better known as Shitlibs and Cuckservatives.
I’m glad you made it home. As far as the KC Chiefs losing to a superior team…I’m a long suffering Chiefs fan from 12 miles east of Arrowhead stadium.
The teams coaches called some of the worst offensive plays at the worst time and they coached the team out of the victory. Their defense had Brady offense pretty much contained most of the game.
I’ll probably be dead B4 they make it to the SB again. I was 14 when they won it in 1971. Oh well, next year, right? Nah….
Way to go Denny! I’ve been sending you stuff with the profound hope that all was well and that we’d hear from ya’ sooner or later. I had faith in your resilience.
It seems as though your old noggin’ is working well since you have had the “knows-how” to think it all through and decide against any further incursions on Mother Nature’s limitations.
Just remember what the old German’s said – “Ve get’s too soon old, and too late smart.” – You seem to have that last part under control.
I was a bit worried, but saw you masking comments other places, so decided and hoped it was a computer glich.
Take care of the noggin, and please heed some of the good advice.
GOD speed.
Wishing you a full and speedy recovery Denny.
There must be a joke somewhere. e.g “How does a boxer know he has concussion? He doesn’t, because he is out to it”
next time, I’m sending you a nurse. I know lots of ’em.
Make it a hot one.
There’s just something about pretty women sticking me with needles…
Stubborn old cuss. Because I’m about the same age I’m going to indulge myself in a bit of preaching here.
You should have turned to the hospital. A concussion isn’t anything to fool around with, especially at your age and being a crip. I’ve also done road trips between Colorado and Wisconsin. That’s a haul even for someone in good shape. What if you would have passed out behind the wheel? Or started to have dizziness or vertigo?
You’re retired and a SRF, so time doesn’t matter. Next time do it right. We need to keep you around. There’s not enough grouchy old guys like us to keep the idiots in check.
It was a slight concussion.
Not meaning to nit-pick or to even parrot the many comments concerning your not getting checked-out at a hospital but, let’s have a little analogy here;
How’s about Obama? he is a “slight” president – And we see how that’s turned out. End of my thought.
Soetoro is a slight president? He’s steamrolled every goddamn Republican majority elected in 2010 (House) and, 2012 (Senate), no?
Tired of pussies. Trump or, bust.
Oops, typo… (2014) Senate. You get the point.
http://theconservativetreehouse.com/2016/01/26/senate-majority-leader-mitch-mcconnell-attorney-heads-pro-cruz-anti-trump-super-pac/
Fuckin’ snakes. All of ’em.
I’ll echo the rest and tell ya I’m glad you’re home. I’m also one of those who thinks that it might’ve been a smart move for you to get checked out before you drove, but bein’ as I’m the same kind of stubborn SOB as you, I’d probably have skipped it, too.
Well, having had a frontal skull fracture, a temporal brain bleed, and now a concussion from an occipital blow, you have achieved a trifecta of brain injury.
You know you made a bad call not seeking medical attention in Colorado-you are very well educated about those matters. You also know that you got home in one piece through sheer good luck. My strong advice is to seek medical attention in Atlanta.
While most subdural bleeds will show within about 48-72 hours, there are outliers. As we age,our brains shrink, and the vessels connecting the brain to the skull are not as well supported- thus making them much more prone to bleeding. The problem with self monitoring is that your judgement may be clouded due to the injury itself.
Actually, this was prolly another subdural hematoma altho’ nowhere near as bad as the one that laid me low a few years back.
How do you know about my frontal skull fracture? That was almost 28 years ago.
When I was a 16 year old lad long before the days of super amusement parks ,the favorite destination for thrills & chills was Conneaut Lake Park co-incidently located on the shore of Conneaut Lake to ride the “Blue Streak Roller Coaster”.
Like most kids of my age I was impatient & ran down the midway to get in line [where at least a 15 minute was normal] at the Blue Streak.
Well …….Did not make it as I slipped on the black top & fell banging my head on the blacktop but I remember trying to get up but everything went black.
About 20 minutes later I slowly woke up on a bed in a starkly white room with 3 lovely women feeling me up all over checking me for responses , pulse, blood pressure & lord only knows what else. Damn! I thought I had died & went to heaven surrounded by beautiful very sexy angels. Considering my relative age , the setting &attention by 3 beautiful angels, I had a certain up lifting response.
Anyway being the macho dude I thought I was, after about a half hour or so I was released to continue my thrills & chills adventure which did not exactly pan out.
Of course I developed an exceedingly massive headache which Aspirin did not faze one bit & ended up in the emergency room at the hospital where x-rays determined I had no fractures just a large bump on the back of my skull. An overnight hospital stay ensued followed by several days of mandatory bed rest at home where I was monitored by my older sister an RN who by many was considered very attractive did not excite me like the 3 guardian angels at the park did.
Anyway recovery was over in a few days & things returned to normal. I am not saying you would have experienced the heavenly event I had in the infirmary but Medical attention for a suspected concussion was then & still is the best choice. However uplifting experiences such as I experienced are not mandatory, usually involuntary.
Glad you are on the road to recovery.
I took care of you at Shepherd .See, you ARE having memory problems!
The only Cindy I remember is someone who is no longer a friend and she was never my nurse anyway.
Just very, very glad you’re home. Take care!
Yea, Claudia’s chippin’ in. Good to know you’re still droppin’ in to help keep the ol’ Crip in line.
Get yourself checked, Denny, please.
Be well.
