I was 31 years old in 2009, and I loved my career. As an editor at a popular magazine, I got to work on big stories, attend cool events, and meet famous celebs all the time.
And yet, after 10 years of working in a job where I was always on deadline, I couldn’t help but feel envious when parents on staff left the office at 6 p.m. to tend to their children, while it was assumed co-workers without kids would stay behind to pick up the slack.
Too bad. Get married and have kids.
“You know, I need a maternity leave!” I told one of my pregnant friends. She laughed, and we spent the afternoon plotting my escape from my 10-hour days, fake baby bump and all.
Of course, that didn’t happen. But the more I thought about it, the more I came to believe in the value of a “meternity” leave — which is, to me, a sabbatical-like break that allows women and, to a lesser degree, men to shift their focus to the part of their lives that doesn’t revolve around their jobs.
Geez. Another clueless lib and another asshole. Instead of your “meternity” leave here is a prestigious award.

Let her take a “leave” and go to some orphanage where she can serve infants who can’t be satisfied. Nothing against infants. They haven’t grown up yet – and neither has she.

Isn’t she pretty much explaining why women make less in the office? Women with children leave the office earlier while the men stay around and continue to work. Just because she’s in the minority and doesn’t have children she can’t see this? Unequal pay for unequal work load!
I’d like to be able to just go outside for a quarter of an hour bludge four times a day without anyone saying anything. Why do I have to smoke to do so?
I’d love to be able to just take 2-3 days off work every month with a vague reference to “problems” with zero questions asked and no medical certificate supplied, but apparently that only works for women.
Same for the office dress code, why is the closed-toe shoe code only enforced for half of the staff? Oh yeah, that’s the male half, doesn’t apply to the females.
It’d be great if I got a handout from the government every month for nothing, but I choose to work full time and not have children. Apparently that’s reserved for those who can’t be bothered to work, or who who choose to have kids while having their lifestyle choice subsidised by me.
If some liberal twit whose parents couldn’t even spell her name correctly thinks she can have perks she’s not entitled to, where’s mine?
And why should I have to actually be disabled to use the disabled parking pays? Surely I can just self-identify as disabled?
