VA Physical

Augusta Georgia.

Time for my annual VA Physical. I drove up yesterday and my sister and bil drove down from Columbia SC and we went out to dinner. We went to Frog Hollow Tavern. We do this every year. My sister found them on Open Table a few years back and we have been going there every year since. This year we all had the same thing:The Grilled Angus Filet of Ribeye. It came with french fries and I mean a lot of french fries. My bil is on a low carb diet so he got collard greens instead of fries. Alas, I can’t drink alcohol the night before my physical so I had to skip the wine. Bah! Normlly we try to go the night of my physical but my sister already had sumpin’ scheduled for tonight.

I whizzed through everything today and even had my final review so if I wasn’t registered another night at the hotel I could have driven home. Of curse, if I had, I would have gotten stuck in rush hour traffic. Better I spend the night and have a nice leisurely drive back tomorrow.

I ate at a nice neighborhood Italian restaurant, Luigi’s within rolling distance of my hotel. It even had checkered tablecloths.

  1. No shit… two things … number 1, happier than a pig in shit everything went well test wise. and, B, have you done their Shrimp & Grits? Sounds freaking fantastic.

Ps. haven’t seen too many “dago” restaurants that serve Dolmades, Avgolemono and, New England clam chowder but, who’s to say?

    • Nope haven’t tried that dish. Not a big grits fan.

The reason they serve Greek food is that the owners are Greek. When the old man first started the restaurant back in 1949, he didn’t think there would be a market for Greek food so he cooked Italian. There is a history on the website.

  2. Good to hear that the VA is takin’ good care of you. I hear too many guys complainin’, but whenever I’ve gone to any of the NorCal facilities they’ve done right by me. When goin’ south to the one at the former Mather AFB I have to deal with crowds, and I see more of the guys who were reals heroes. You can tell, ’cause some of ’em wear decorations that show they’d single-handedly saved the entire supply of TP for all the generals in Saigon, while at the same time settin’ the all time record for most Klingon vessels destroyed by a Space Shuttle Door Gunner in one engagement. Are there lots of guys like that at the Clinic where you go?

    • Naw, mostly old dudes. Only clue as to what branch they served in are their ball caps. Not sure about the rest of the facility, but the spinal cord facility (which is why I have to to Augusta) always does real well by me. I get a better physical exam there than I do with my HMO in Atlanta.

      • VA visits are like birthdays — proof that the universe has not yet killed you. So go and celebrate. Buy a box of the best, grab a plastic straw, and….

  3. Always good to read good news.
I’ll be in Augusta middle of April and b-i-l has a business not far from the Frog Hollow Tavern so I’ll suggest we have a taste.
    Best to you and yours.

  4. Hope everything turns out very well with your Annual Physical, Denny.
I often find my (q.6 months) week of essential medical tests so boring. Feel like an old machine being checked for rust and leaks. And very few people has ever praised me for keeping it running decently all those years. Not that easy!
I think you’re admirable, Denny. I know that sometimes you have it tough during the year. But you always make a nice interesting trip out of your VA Physical, using the occasion to meet with your family, and enjoying delicious meals. Still learning much from you.
