The first time I saw Sammy Hagar was right after he left Montrose and took everyone with him except Montrose. It was Monstrose without Montrose. He had Bill Church on bass and Denny Carmassi on drums. He was the warm up act for Ted Nugent. Sammy came out and I turned to my friend Cliff and said, “Wait! He plays guitar?” Pretty well too. He stole the show. Poor Ted had to really up his game. It wasn’t very long that Sammy sold out the venue every time he came to St. Louis. He’s now 71 and he’s still rocking.
