Virginia Wine Tasting Day 2

An actual day of wine tasting. We tasted a few good ones and I bought a few bottles. We had a very good tasting at Horton Vineyards. We were the only ones there. The lady doing he pouring was from France and was very knowledgeable. Duh! She was French. She was from the Loire Valley so she wasn’t a rude Parisian. She gave us a few extra pours.

Then it was off to Barboursville for tasting and lunch at Palladio which to me is the highlight of the trip. What did I have to eat I hear you ask? Funny you should ask. Here is what I ate.

Lonzino di Maiale con Radicchio, Pere e Formaggio Feta
Barboursville Raised Pork Lonzino
Roasted Pears, Radicchio, Feta, Pistachios & Sherry Vinaigrette

Barboursville Vineyards Vermentino Reserve 2017

Bistecca di Manzo alla Griglia con Budino di Pane e Fontina*
Grilled Beef Strip Loin
Rosemary-Fontina Bread Pudding, Braised Kale & Octagon Demi

Barboursville Vineyards Cabernet Franc Reserve 2017

Babà al Rum
Rum Babà
Golden Raisins, Pecans & Orange Cream

Barboursville Vineyards Paxxito 2015

They don’t scrimp on the servings. It’s such a large meal, my sister and I don’t bother to eat dinner. My sister is never able to finish her meal at the Bavarian Chef from our first night, so my BIL is able to eat her leftovers the next night.

  1. Well, that sounds pretty good GOC, but doesn’t compare to the Miller Lite, two sliders and hunk of three day old pumpkin pie I had at Bubba’s this afternoon.

    I have a feeling you’d enjoy either spot …. as would I.

  2. As a life-long Virginian, I love visiting God’s country (central VA) but I live in the northern part of the state, swamp-adjacent. Three of the northern counties, Richmond, Charlottesville and Norfolk are responsible for turning the state blue. My guess is those places are where the government job-dependent folks live. Can’t believe the governor survived his black face scandal.

    • Just learned about this: Today, The Washington Post apologized for asking for Va’s Governor Northam’s resignation for wearing black face in a yearbook photo! Gotta say, I don’t read the WaPo, I read this online.

      Seriously, they apologized.

  3. I’m surprised you got to eat at Palladio’s. They are open so few hours.

You should try Mountain Cove Vineyards and Elk Run. They are more reasonably priced.

  4. Glad to see you came back again this year to wonderful Greene Co./with a stop in Orange (at the overpriced Palladio restaurant) because you are contributing your tax $ to the latest folly of our Board of Supervisors: a decrepit 100 year old brick home, bought for $1 Million, will become the future Visitor Center in front of Lowes/Walmart and be the “beacon of what the county has to offer”. It will feature “space for leg stretching, tailgating, dog walking and picknicking” (quote). Please come back (not for the “so-so” Octagon wine from Barboursville Vineyard – I bought a few bottles once for those in Italy and France who “know” wine and never heard one word back – but to help pay back the 40 year mortgage on this Visitor Center. Greene Co. is mired in long-term debt and needs your tourism $. And if you ever want to visit an idyllic spot, with grass-fed lambs, come over to Three Sheep Inn Farm (https://three-sheep-inn-farm.com) : I will gladly open a few bottles from France and Italy for you to realize what you have been missing all along and it’s free! How was LaFayette Inn?

    • Fine. This was the second time we ate there. Thanks for your recommendation. There is no way I would buy a bottle of Octagon. It could not compete with the Bordeaux I have in my cellar. When visiting Virginia, I only buy white wines. I’m happy my hotel tax I paid at Holiday Inn Express will help pay off the mortgage for the new visitor center.
