Yeah, I’ve lived most of my life in the Golden State, but lots of that was when it was still California, not Northern Hollywood/Northern Baja Mexico.
I did get that letter that began “Greetings from the POTUS” and that won me an all expenses paid trip to Hawaii. Of course, to get there I had to first see scenic Ft. Lewis, WA and beautiful Ft. Jackson, SC. And it turns out that the Hawaii part was just a stopover on the rest of the vacation that also showed me VietNam, Japan and Okinawa. Believe me, I saw idiots and savages of all colors and persuasions. If my memory serves me correctly, the best training I got that really prepared me for the fun-in-the-jungle came in Basic Training, from Drill Sgt. Reynolds (who just happened to be black) and a good portion of the NCOs and officers who were white should’ve considered themselves lucky to rise to the level of Dinglebrain First Class.
BTW, I grew up in Oakland, and yes, as the saying goes a lot of my friends were black.
