Guilty As Charged

Heironymus sent me this. I wish the creator of this knew that it should be “toeing” and not “towing”.

    • Its from an old Army saying about “Toeing the line” which was one of the first things new recruits learned how to do, stand in formation.

In more detail there would be lines painted on the floor for the recruits to use. Put your toes on the line and you would be in proper formation.

      • “Toeing the line” was also associated with “coming up to scratch” in the days before the Marquis of Queensbury.

When performing a ‘Right Dress’, the soldier does not look down at his toes, he aligns with the jaws of his comrades to the right. The SMaj or his deputy conducts the “toeing the line” manoeuvre.

        Cheers

    • Sorry. You do not tow a line. Towing implies that you are gonna take it somewhere like a tow truck or a tow boat. Where are you gonna tow the party line to? You toe it as in you stand on a line thus conforming with others, therefore you “toe the party line”.

  1. Racism in 2014, what the accusation of ” a witch” was in 1693, or the accusation of “communist” was, in 1955. An empty threat meant to stop debate, thrown by the party who knows they are wrong and/or losing the argument. It is an attempt to portray the accused as guilty without a chance to respond to the accusation, or defend themselves.

  2. You forgot Islamaphobe and several other types of “phobes”.

Not really; a “phobia” is an unreasonable fear of something or someone.
