Michael sent me this story that was also in this morning’s Atlanta Urinal and Constipation.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Biofuels made from the leftovers of harvested corn plants are worse than gasoline for global warming in the short term, a study shows, challenging the Obama administration’s conclusions that they are a much cleaner oil alternative and will help combat climate change.
They’re worse for car engines as well.
A $500,000 study paid for by the federal government and released Sunday in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Climate Change concludes that biofuels made with corn residue release 7 percent more greenhouse gases in the early years compared with conventional gasoline.
Bad for engines and bad for the environment. A twofer. And this is from a study sponsored by the federal gummint.
While biofuels are better in the long run,
Bullshit! Bullshit! Bullshit!
the study says they won’t meet a standard set in a 2007 energy law to qualify as renewable fuel.
The conclusions deal a blow to what are known as cellulosic biofuels, which have received more than a billion dollars in federal support but have struggled to meet volume targets mandated by law. About half of the initial market in cellulosics is expected to be derived from corn residue.
Another boondoggle.
The biofuel industry and administration officials immediately criticized the research as flawed. They said it was too simplistic in its analysis of carbon loss from soil, which can vary over a single field, and vastly overestimated how much residue farmers actually would remove once the market gets underway.
Of course the biofuel industry is against this study. They want the gravy train to continue.
Ethanol. A bad idea that costs more than it is worth, especially since we are nowhere near running out of oil or natural gas. Do you wanna talk about corporate welfare and crony capitalism? Look no further than the biofuel industry.
so while natural gas and oil are in great supply, we are supposed to use our water (didn’t rain much this winter out West) to grow corn to feed our cars and not our cattle? So corn becomes more expensive, water becomes more scarce and beef prices go up. But on the bright side, ethanol does release more emissions! Wait, uhhhh….is this how it is supposed to work? I guess so if you listen to the feds.
yikes…
“a 2007 energy law”?
Hmmm, now what asshole was in the Oval Office…
Meanwhile, the price of corn will skyrocket to the point people will no longer be able to afford it to eat.
“Biofuels made from the leftovers of harvested corn plants are worse than gasoline for global warming in the short term”………..
“While biofuels are better in the long run”
Wait, what? I guess you CAN have it both ways.
Truth……it’s all Bullshit. As if the farm bill (food stamp bill) isn’t large enough, this I just another subsidy disguised as a green house gas savior to slow global warming. In other words, DOUBLE BULLSHIT!
This will turn out to be a typical Obama economic clusterfuck. Mandated by the government, the Navy and the Air Force were forced to use some bio jet fuel so as to lower their carbon footprint. Firstly, bio fuel is no cleaner than fossil fuel. The kicker is that bio-jet fuel extreamly expensive. The Air Force , which usually pays $ 3.60 per gal paid $ 59.00 per gal for Bio-fuel’ The Navy got a better deal by buying in bulk. By buying 450,000 gals they were able to force the price down to $26.00 versis $3.60 for regular JP4. Buy a dirty fuel, pay way more for it. Yep, sounds like a progressive plan to me.
It’s not Obama.

If it weren’t for crony capitalist Bull Moose Republicans angling ways to make Socialism work in America, the commie assholes like Obama, and the Clintons, would be dead in their tracks.
As Scotty used to say on Star Trek: “But Captain, I can’t change the laws of physics!”
These yahoos think they can get anything they want if they just ask for it. When it doesn’t happen they get all ornery and shat.
Just give me my ethanol filtered, then aged in an oak cask please. Over ice would be nice.
Ethanol is made from grains. The EPA is running this nightmare.
1) Cows, hogs, chickens, and other edible farm animals eat grains. Grains diverted from farm animals to be made into fuel reduce the available grains for farm animals (meat). The law of supply and demand tells me that meat is going to be more expensive as well as our fuel.
2) Ethanol attacks rubber and decomposes it. If you have a vehicle that is 20 years old or older yo have rubber gas hoses, pickups, and gaskets. Exposure to ethanol will degrade or decompose those rubber parts. ($3500 damage on my classic Corvette)
3) By adding ethanol to gasoline it causes the fuel to break down quicker and turn to varnish. I have had to replace the carburetor on my tiller, pressure washer and lawn mower because they varnished up after 3 months of non use even with the use of a fuel stabilizer. ($1100 and still counting on my small engines)
So, why aren’t you buying Rec gas?
Rec gas? What is that?
No ethanol. I use Rec gas in my boats, and yard equipment. Side benefit is no road tax. I also use “off road” diesel in my Deere. Again, no road tax.
Oops! Lemme clarify all that… Recreational is what the gas is sometimes referred to or, off road. The diesel is qualified as agricultural fuel, and is orange instead of green in color. Both fuels are not charged road tax in Michigan.
