I think that this quote from Carl Sagan explains Jewish cognitive dissonance:

If American Jews are grateful for the birth of the modern state of Israel, perhaps they’re voting for the party of Harry Truman, the president who acted as its midwife, out of an increasingly misguided sense of gratitude. But if it’s because they desire the biggest, most intrusive and all-controlling government possible, they need to crack open a history book and see how well it worked out for their Central European cousins between 1933 and 1945. Of course, voting Democommierat these days already requires an enormous personal disconnection from history, reality, facts, and common sense. So they may actually feel it’ll be different this time.
