This is my favorite lineup of Megadeth. I think Marty Friedman is an incredible guitarist and I like this drummer. This version is very heavy on bass shows off Ellefson’s bass work. Mustaine no longer uses a doubleneck guitar when they play this live so there is no 12 string in it. I know a girl I should send this song to.

  1. Ah, don’t we all know a girl we could send this song to?! Great video, top song, and I agree that Marty’s time in Megadeth was excellent. When there was a rumour of him returning for the next album, I knew they’d turn out to be BS (which Marty himself confirmed), but gee I was hoping it was true! Thanks for sharing.

    • I saw sumpin’ on YouTube comparing Marty to Chris Broderick (who has now left Megadeth). Chris is prolly technically the better of the two but it was Marty who wrote all of those killer solos that Chris later played. Another story I heard was right after Marty laid down the solo for Tornado of Souls, Dave listened to it in the studio, turned to Marty, didn’t say anything, and turned to Marty and shook his hand. IMO it is one of the best guitar solos ever written. Did you see the video where they showed Marty, Dover (who totally fucked it up), Pitrelli, and Broderick playing it?

      • Nope, I haven’t seen that but I’ll scour YouTube and see if I can track it down. It sounds very interesting. I’ve lost track if how many different Megadeth lineups I’ve seen live in concert, and while each is unique, there are a few standout performers (of whom Marty is certainly one notable example, and Tornado of Souls is indeed a masterpiece). One thing is certain: it must be very ‘interesting’ working with/for Mustaine. I’ve never known such a great band to hire/fire (+/- rehire) so many different blokes! Here’s hoping the new album (and newest lineup) is a lot better than the last one or two.

        • I looked on YouTube for that clip for a while and couldn’t find it. I posted it once on Sunday Metal so I know it’s out there. As I said, Drover couldn’t play it worth a damn. He was hired because that was the only way his drummer brother would join the group. Chris Broderick just left and has been replaced by some dude from South America. I’ll be interested to see how he plays some of their songs. It would have been nice if he could have gotten Marty back, but he’s now happily living in Japan where he performs with some Japanese groups. He also has instructional videos on YouTube.

        • Still can’t find it but here’s one with Pitrelli, Broderick, and Friedman playing it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nX-rm5V-cDQ

IMO Broderick’s is actually the best technical version but since Marty wrote it his performance has the most feeling in it. I have the DVD of that concert. Pitrelli plays the rundown near the end using a pentatonic scale rather than going down the fretboard like Marty and Broderick do. What I wouldn’t give to be able to play that solo!
