Some good old fashioned Sammy Hagar before he joined Van Halen. This was recorded at the Checkerdome (which no longer exists) in St. Louis back in 1983. I can’t believe I missed this concert. I lived in St. Louis back then and I don’t remember ever missing Sammy when he came to town. Sammy loved St. Louis and St. Louis loved Sammy! He always sold out. The first time I saw him was right after he left Montrose and he opened for Ted Nugent. He stole the show. Look at the energy.
I lived 20 miles east of KCMO in these days and I saw him a few times as well. What a good time he was in those days and he was a helluva geetar player & singer. There were terrific shows in those days. The Stones at Arrowhead. Ted Nugent at Arrowhead as well. Denny, do you remember the Ozark Mtn. Music festival in the late 70’s I believe that was insanely huge??
I’m gettin’ old as hell.
Don’t remember that, but I do remember a 4th of July concert at Lake of the Ozarks that had the James Gang (after Joe Walsh had left), Jo Jo Gunne, Black Oak Arkansas, and one other group. I was pretty stoned by then which is prolly why I can’t remember the last group. That was when I had my rustic cabin (no indoor plumbing but it was right on the Lake on the Niangua arm and I only paid $150 a year rent) there. I went water skiing in the morning and then went to the concert in the afternoon and evening and drove drove back to St. Louis that night ’cause I had to work the next morning. Good times. Concerts were always cheap. I don’t think I ever paid more than $10 for decent seats and I saw good groups like Sammy, Van Halen, Jethro Tull, Yes, the Allman Brothers, and many others. Now seats start at $35 or more.
The OMMF was held at the MO state fairgrounds in Sedalia. The town was ruined and I’ll bet that it tooks months to clean the mess up.
In the late 70’s.
scuse me….1974
Just saw Sammy last Monday at the Hard Rock in Orlando. There is no stop in this guy. Must have signed 50 autographs during the show.
His band “The Circle” includes favorites Mike Anthony and Jason Bonham, but I should have been more familiar with Vic Johnson on guitar. This guy can play it all. Outstanding! You may remember Vic from the Bus Boys (featured in Eddie Murphy’s 48 Hours with “The Boys are Back in Town”).
Set list included most of Sammy’s solo classics, hat tip to Montrose with Rock candy, four Zeppelin cuts (Rock and Roll, Whole Lotta Love, Levee Breaks, and Good Times Bad Time), and five from the VanHagar era.
Johnson has been playing with Sammy a long time in his Cabo Wabo Band. I have a DVD that Sammy cut in St. Louis a few years back with that band. Had a female Mexican bass player and Michael Anthony appeared in the 2nd half of the show. Can you believe he is 67 years old? He sure hasn’t slowed down much.
