I was at that show! Peter Frampton headlined it and was touring to promote his disastrous album “I’m in You.” Bill Graham definitely got it wrong that day – Skynyrd should have headlined the show as the crowd began leaving in droves after their set and, then, throughout Frampton’s performance.
Skynyrd was just starting out then and Frampton was established. It happens. I remember the first time I saw Sammy Hagar. This was just after he left Montrose and took the band minus Montrose with him. He was the warmup act for Ted Nugent. He stole the show. Nugent had to be on his A game to follow Sammy that night. Ever since then, St. Louis has loved Sammy and Sammy has loved St. Louis. I’ve got a DVD recorded in St. Louis a few years back with his Cabo Wabo band.
