One of the best early 70’s hard rock bands.
Saw them live once. The swagger of Rusty Day on stage was amazing. Too bad he was killed in a drug deal gone bad.
The album shown is not the album this cut came from. It came from their second album One Way or Another.
70’s, Heavy Metal band members into drugs?
Oh My, and here I thought they were all born again Christians.
Fill that bong up and play some cactus on the Pioneer 8 track. So long ago.
I had One Way or Another on 8 track and I prolly wore that out. Almost every cut on that album was superb.
Cactus totally rocked. They had one of the most kickass rhythm sections ever: Tim Bogert and Carmine Appice. Prior to Cactus, Rusty Day spent some time with Ted Nugent’s Amboy Dukes, recording one LP with them, the awesome MIGRATION (1969). After Cactus, Bogert & Appice hooked up with Jeff Beck in one of the last great power trios. They squeezed out one studio LP, a live LP and called it quits in 1974.
Cactus was originally gonna be Bogert, Appice, along with Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart but Beck broke his leg in an accident, so they picked up Rusty Day, a Detroit dude who had been with a lot of groups and Jim McCarty who had played with Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels. Rod Stewart teamed up with The Faces. When I saw Cactus live, they were the warm up group for Rod Stewart and The Faces. When the show started, Rusty said, “We’re gonna kick your asses.” Then they proceeded to do so. I thought they were the better band that night. Unfortunately, Cactus had ego problems and were always fighting among themselves. Bogert wanted his bass playing to take a bigger part. They broke up right after their last live gig in Memphis, which was recorded. I’ve got an album with that on it along with some other live sessions when Bogert and Appice picked up a new singer and guitarist and added a keyboard player. That incarnation released an album called ‘ot and Sweaty with part of the live concert on one side and a studio session on the other.
