In ’98 my daughter graduated high school and went into USNavy. Within 2 years she was workin’ on million dollar aircraft and later re-upped for a nice bonus while in a combat zone. When a helicopter part came in from the Fleet and had to be sent back to Depot level for replacement, she grabbed it for just long enough to take measurements, then fabbed a new one right there in the shop and it went back and it was installed before all the paperwork was finished to get the “official” one, and that earned her a commendation letter. How many of these college kids could even change a tire these days without a support group and 2 shrinks?
Sounds like she has learned skills that will do her well in civilian life. My electronics training in the Navy helped get me a job with IBM where I spent 31.5 years. Smart that she reupped in a combat zone so her bonus was tax free.
Yeah, but I think I’m proudest of the fact she was willin’ to put on the uniform and give something back to this Country. We discussed the fact that she worked on some planes that might be killing people. Her response was, basically, that if that was the case they were probably needin’ to be killed.
Life is too easy and kids lack direction. Left to their own devices they’ll go for their “safe spaces.”
I wouldn’t want my kids to face machine gun fire or night jumps.
I also don’t want my kids to face sinking into heroin or cocaine.
How do you convince a kid how good he has it when all he longs for is the latest iPhone?

I watched a documentary on D-Day the other night that included first-person interviews with WWII veterans who were there, jumping out of airplanes and dodging bullets and mortar fire. I was both fascinated and appalled at how many things went wrong. The scattered drops of the parachutists. The armor sinking in the channel. The rough water that might’ve doomed a massive amphibious assault. But the troops succeeded. The Americans took it on the chin but didn’t get knocked out.
So if we took these 21st-century college kids and sent them half-drowned and soak-and-wet with no equipment onto Omaha Beach against German MG42 machine guns and artillery and mortars, what would happen? The little twinkies would run and/or hide. I mean they would turn and run back into the water or stay hidden behind the tank traps. Kids these days are stupid, lazy and shallow. And it gets worse with every passing generation. I saw a bumper sticker the other day that read, Idiots Beget More Idiots. There it is: idiots are marrying other idiots and raising their children as idiots.
