Cold weather struck France’s young vine buds again this week, and Bordeaux is the latest region to suffer frost damage. Farther north, Burgundy and Champagne also weathered cold conditions and frost. Damage reports are incomplete so far, mainly because winegrowers have been busy preparing anti-frost measures.

“We can already estimate that we have lost nearly half of the potential crop,” said Xavier Coumau, president of Bordeaux’s Syndicate of Wine and Spirits Courtiers.Many are calling it the worst frost since 1991, as temperatures dropped to nearly 26° F in some spots. Damage has been reported on the Right Bank, including in Pomerol and St.-Emilion—though the plateau of St.-Emilion was spared—as well as Pessac and Graves and even up in the western edge of the Médoc.

We need to learn that the truly insidious thing about Climate Change is that it just doesn’t mean the world is getting warmer, it also means that frosts will occur in late April in locations as far south as Green Bay, WI.

No kidding. I still remember all the books and predictions I read and heard about in the 70’s of global cooling and the threat of a new Ice Age coming upon us. And all the books predicting mass famine and death sometime in the mid 80’s. By all rights we should be long dead by now. What BS.

About two nights ago we had frost warning here in Northern Illinois. Temperatures dropped to about 38 degrees. Some global warming we are having. Sorry for all those wine growers in both France and England. It’s got to be frustrating.

Basically, if you don’t speak French, mid May is the earliest date when you can expect NOT to have any frost, according to peasant culture. If you’re a gardener, you wait until then before getting plants out…

We’re still coming out of an ice age. It’s been warmer than it is now for most of the last 700 million years (since there’s been complex life forms). Temperatures and coastlines have always changed.
The biggest causes of severe climate change have been volcanism and meteor impacts. It is better to prepare for those very real contingencies than scamming our gullible citizenry, crippling our economy, and enriching the ruling elites.
We had a space program. We should have used it to develop defenses against big rocks from outer space. We even have a moon to practice on. We’re screwed.

If I remember correctly historically, Wisconsin has had snow in all but two months – July and August.
