Reminds me of some of my friends of the Negro persuasion. When we were growing up, if one of ’em used the word another would chastise him by sayin’ not to say nigger, ’cause “not that I am one, I don’t want to be around one.” They’d get mad at one another and compare skin tone, implyin’ that the darker the color, the lower class one was. We’d cruise the Strip on E14th Street, with my buddy Brad bein’ several shades darker than even the most deeply tanned Mexicans in the other cars. Never did get in any fights or anything. That kind of stuff was reserved to more vital arguments like Chevy vs Ford vs Plymouth. We knew what was important in those days.

Double standard, one which I have no respect for. Growing up in the 70’s we were taught never to use that word and the Blacks were trying very hard to have nobody including themselves to ever use it. It was considered degrading and beneath the country at that time and only the bad guys used that word. Times have changed, not for the better.
The simple fact of the matter is that, “Nigger” is a slang for NEGRO. Southerners I suspect, called them “Nigra” because of their accent. Then it turned into the term we sha’n’t use today, because somebody doesn’t understand.
But now, their own race, uses it with impunity amongst there peers, but we can’t say it, because it’s “racist”?
OK, then. Stop calling me a NAZI, because my origins are from Germany. Is it a racial issue? Stop calling me a POLLACK because, at the time, because my relatives lived in an area that might have been part of a border “dispute”.
The bottom line is, you can’t hurt me with words. Only wimps and SJW, Antifa, and Democrats have this problem.

I’m thinking there’s a little truth to everyone’s theory. In the mid 16th century: via Spanish and Portuguese from Latin niger, nigr- ‘black’ in espanol today. My grandmother from Mississippi did in fact refer to black folks as nigras or darkies … regardless of the origins, I believe to most of us that “nigger” in the present day refers to an asshole who is black.
