Ruckersville Virginia
So here we are in beautiful Ruckersville Virginia, the base of operations for our 2017 wine tasting trip. We did this last year and enjoyed it so much we decided to do it again. The nice thing about Virginia wines are that many of the grape varietals migrated to Missouri so we’re already familiar with some of he wines like Vidal Blanc (a white that tastes a lot like a Pinot Grigio) and Norton (a red that tastes a lot like a Syrah).
Today was just the drive up so not tasting has been done so far. We did eat at the best restaurant in Ruckersville (according to Google), the Blue Ridge Cafe. We ate there once last year.
My friend Pres sent me this interesting info on the NFL.
NFL Facts
In 2012 the NFL had an issue with Tim Tebow kneeling for each game to pray, they also had an issue with Tebow wearing John 3:16 as part of his eyeblack to avoid glare and made him take it off.
In 2013 the NFL fined Brandon Marshall for wearing green cleats to raise awareness for people with mental health disorders.
In 2014 Robert Griffin III (RG3) entered a post-game press conference
wearing a shirt that said “Know Jesus Know Peace,” but was forced to turn it inside out by an NFL uniform inspector
before speaking at the podium.
In 2015 DeAngelo Williams was fined for wearing “Find the Cure” eye black for breast cancer awareness..
In 2015 William Gay was fined for wearing purple cleats to raise
awareness for domestic violence.
(Not that the NFL has a domestic violence problem…)
In 2016 the NFL prevented the Dallas Cowboys from wearing decals on their helmets in honor of 5 Dallas Police officers killed in the line of duty.
In 2016 the NFL threatened to fine players who wanted to wear cleats to commemorate the 15th anniversary of 9/11.
So tell me again how the NFL supports free speech and expression all
of a sudden…
It seem quite clear based on these fact that the NFL has taken a position against any action by NFL players demonstrating RESPECT for any issue: For God, social causes such as mental health, cancer, domestic violence, for cops killed arbitrarily for being cops, for the Memory of 9/11…
But, they will allow demonstrations of DISRESPECT for our National
Flag, our National Anthem, for America,
and for the American People if it will help mollify a particular
group and its supporters (such as BLM, and other leftists…)
That is what the NFL has shown itself to be.
Pass this post along to all your friends and family. Honor our military, too many of whom have come home with the American Flag draped over their coffins.
Just for the record, I have not watched even so much as a minute of an NFL game ever since the owners did that bullshit solidarity with the players by locking arms with them or kneeling with them. The NFL is dead to me and I used to be a rabid fan. When I lived in St. Louis, I had season tickets to the Cardinals from 1978 until 1985 when I moved to Atlanta. In St. Louis, I had a lot of football parties and always had a Super Bowl party. I didn’t continue this practice in Atlanta because I didn’t have football fan friends here like I did in St. Louis.
It’s really a shame to see what the leftists have done to the NFL this year. In only 6 weeks, the NFL went from the most popular sport in America to the least popular sport. To prove that SJWs always double down, the NFL just rewarded the architect of this implosion, Robert Goodell, with a contract extension and a raise. In the future, business schools with teach a case study of the demise of the NFL just like they teach other marketing failures like New Coke. As I have written many times, you can always get new players. Getting new customs is harder. The president of the Baltimore Raves has taken to sending letters to his former fans begging them to come to games.
Same here with me. Seems like a long time ago when I was a rabid Bronco fan watching Manning lead them to win the Super Bowl. Haven’t watched a minute this year and frankly, could care less. There’s absolutely nothing they could do to get me back.
I thought if there was anyone that wouldn’t put up with this crap, it would’ve have been John Elway.
In 2002, the NFL refused to allow Peyton Manning to wear high topped shoes in honor of Johnny Unitas, who had just passed away.
Well, Denny, here’s hopin’ you enjoy that tastin’ tour.
As I have grown older sports has lost importance. I have other issues that have become more important. Old age brings lots of medical issues. Priorities change. No longer watch much sports. Do still go to hockey but to a AA team here is KC. They at least are trying. Might get paid $500 a week.
So, you are in “beautiful Ruckersville”….! From someone who lives there, honestly what do you find “beautiful” in Ruckersville? Locals only see the blight, the poorly kept properties/damaged building facades at the intersection of Rte 29 and 33……Burger King, Taco Bell, a few used car dealers, a motel on 29??? I’ll gladly pass -like most here – on the “Blue Ridge Cafe” and would go to a real restaurant just a few miles away, Lafayette Inn, in Stanardsville. Real wine connoisseurs still prefer California wines, if not French, Italian or Spanish ones to any VA wines that are indeed outrageously priced..
This being said, keep up the good work. I love your website and your thoughts
The Blue Ridge Cafe is the best restaurant in Ruckersville which doesn’t say much for Ruckersville. It was tongue in cheek. My sister looked for a restaurant close to where we were staying, the Holiday Inn Express, and Google said that was the best restaurant in Ruckersville. As for “beautiful”, I say that about a lot of towns I have been in. I’m just being nice for a change.
As someone who is a wine connoisseur and has a cellar full of French Bordeaux along with some nice Italian wines, I can say there are some nice Virginia wines to be had. You are correct that they are overpriced, especially compared to some comparable Missouri Nortons and Vidal Blancs, but there are some good wines to be had. Anyway, we were primarily tasting and not buying, altho’ I did buy six bottles on the trip.
Our second night there we ate at the Bavarian Chef. Good food. Huge portions.
Now, I understand better. Thanks a lot for the response. Yes, the Bavarian Chef on Seminole Trail offers classic, not fancy, good food. I have only French and Italian wines in my cellar. Heresy? It all depends upon what one expects from wines! No one could explain to me why a St Emilion, a Lalande de Pomerol, an Amarone or a Barbaresco, are still way cheaper than any standard wine from either Prince Michel, Horton or Barboursville vineyards! Brillat-Savarin wrote: A meal without wine is a day without sunshine! I bet you’ll agree…Thanks for visiting my neck of the woods where I am raising sheep.
