Hmmm – 50 years ago, went to high school, shotguns in the rack behind the seat(going dove hunting after), like most of my peers. Never heard of mass shootings. School had a shooting range (guns – not heroin), no mass shootings. Not uncommon to see a group of kids with 22’s heading out to bag some rabbits or shoot rats down by the train tracks, damn few accidental shootings. Seems safer when everyone carried a gun rather than not. Schools become gun free zones – kids get arrested for point a finger or drawing a gun. Now schools are easy targets for the whack jobs in our society and all the snowflakes cry about not being safe and liberals are afraid of those evil guns.
I could end up going on a never ending rant so will wrap it up with this.
Show me one, just one gun control law, one gun control act that has stopped a single murderer, rapist or any other criminal. Just one is all I ask. The truth is there are none and as long as people are prevented from defending themselves this insanity will continue.

If the main issue is to protect our children then why not restrict entry into our schools thru designated entrances , install metal detectors & man those entry points with armed guards.You know like we do at court houses & airports.

Our schools do not teach our children to respect authority or obey our laws. We also need to understand no magic new gun control law can ever be the solution as those who do commit these horrendous mass shootings are already in violation of every existing gun law as well as feel murder is an acceptable or legitimate social protest.
I am a Benefactor life member of the NRA & recognize the work they have done to defend our constitutional rights & their efforts to educate the citizens of this country particulary children about gun safety. More gun control laws will not solve the problem , neither will taxing ammo , smart guns or any other feel good restrictions .As for access to weapon s…..when my children were young access was not possible for my firearms were then & now kept locked up.
What I feel would work as an effective measure to make a positive impact to this problem is a Firearms license requirement to certify understanding of what the weapon is, how to safely handle it, what responsibility is required & also as a part of the licensing process an evaluation of the mental capability of the individual applying for this license.
Yes I am saying some people must be denied access to & ownership of firearms Any honest review of the mental capabilities of those who have committed these shootings substantiates this to be essential.
After all we need to identify those who are predisposed to likely commit a crime of this nature. &prevent it from happening.
This license should be federal in scope but could be administered at the state level & reciprocal from state to state.
We also must educate our voting population to consider what we need to achieve …..Why do I say this ? Sandy Hook was another tragedy but the people there had short memories . Sandy Hook is a part of a larger governmental community , after this shooting occurred a measure was put before the community to provide protection to future school students in the form of controlled entrances with armed guards to monitor all who wish to enter.
It was voted down as too expensive & not neccessary! I can only say DUH? to that mentality.
What ever we do must identify who is likely to commit these crimes, protect the innocent , follow what the constitution allows & develop crotrol measures which address the real identified problem1s & do not serve as a political agenda forum for self promotion .

I posted nothing about registration or a data base…..What I posted was what I considered to be a common sense alternative to the approach of the Media & Democratic party, a proactive plan to assure our constitutional rights are maintained which would serve to identify those who for mental reasons should be restricted from gun ownership.By the way that is permissible under current law but no effective policy is in place which achieves that.

Well George, I will stand by my post as well as my 60 year record of Gun Ownership,Hunting, Competitive Trap & pistol shooting , hunter safety instructor history ,
8 year service as a volunteer conservation officer , Presidency of the second oldest Sports club in Pennsylvania & life member , membership in 3 others, gun rights advocate, benefactor NRA life member & Ammo loader & concealed weapons permit holder.
During my career I have been witness to many who should not have access to a firearm ,target shoot or hunt.
Here in Pennsylvania the Game Commission hunter safety program has been very successful in educating new hunters in proper gun handling & safety concerns which has resulted in vast reductions in accidental deaths &injuries.
My concept for a license has nothing to do with registration , vast DNA Data bases .The Federal overall basis is to ensure uniformity across all states for all people except convicted felons & particulary those with mental illness who would tend to commit shooting crimes. The administration of the system would be an individual state responsibility.
As to the efforts of Progressives or the Media & the Democratic P they would continue on in their misguided quest to establish a liberal Utopia but they will continue with their efforts regardless of what we do .
If we can stop or drastically reduce gun violence in our schools & provide safety for our children then the efforts by the Progressives & Democrats will be meaningless.
I can say with first hand knowledge unless we take the lead attacking mass shooting by mentally ill people we will lose .

I do not have a problem with getting a driving license, hunter safety education to be eligible for a hunting license “Required in all Canadian Province s&most western states’ a background check to be eligible for a concealed weapon permit/license. I do not see a requirement for a license to own ,purchase or handle a firearm to be any different as long as we all remain vigilant.
Now, please explain how this federal license program you want will not be taken over by progressives and used to deny second amendment rights. Service members that underwent treatment for PTSD? I see all kinds of comments about arming teachers, and other school staff. From my point of view a really stupid idea. First look at the schools near you, how many have a fence to keep people off the school grounds that are not suppose to be there? How many entrances to the school,and how are they controlled? Put up a real fence, 10 foot high , restrict entrance to the school that can be controlled. If you want to hire a guard, hire a combat veteran who has actually been shot at. There are over 94,000 public schools in this country. I am betting less than 10 percent even have a four foot fence around the playground.
