My friend Phil sent me this article.
Protesters take over the elevated Interstate 10 during a march in New Orleans protesting the death of George Floyd, a Black man who was in police custody in Minneapolis. Advocates are intensifying their calls for city and state governments to remove the highways that destroyed Black neighborhoods.
Yep! Let’s destroy progress.
As protesters in cities from Richmond, Virginia, to San Francisco toppled statues last month, urban planner Amy Stelly allowed herself to hope that New Orleans might soon fell its own worst “racist monument.”
For much of her life, Stelly, who is Black, has lived in the shadow of the Claiborne expressway, an elevated freeway built through the Tremé, Tulane/Gravier and 7th Ward neighborhoods. She has fought to tear down the highway and restore this commercial corridor at the heart of Black New Orleans, but faced skepticism, indifference and inertia.
Now, as the nation reckons with other racist aspects of its past — with protests, in several prominent instances, on ’60s-era freeways much like the Claiborne — Shelly and other advocates around the country are intensifying their calls for city and state governments to remove the highways that destroyed Black neighborhoods.
Seems far fetched? Nothing is impossible in Dimocrat run cities.
Such teardown projects, once seen as fanciful, have gained momentum as the country’s highway infrastructure ages and early adopters show off their success. Five U.S. cities have either capped freeways or converted them to street-grade boulevards in the past three years, and similar plans are under review in states including Massachusetts, California and Texas.
Race usually has been a subtext in these conversations. But in the current climate, advocates say it’s time for cities to confront and resolve the racist planning decisions their predecessors made 60 years ago.
“It gives us more ammunition,” Stelly said. “Because when you look at how these things have developed in their totality, they’re absolutely racist.”
Yep! Interstates be racist.
Since the Africans are destroying the cities, I guess we won’t really need these interstates that go into cities. We can just use bypasses. I mean why bother taking I-10 into Nawlins when you can bypass it using I-12? Tear down these highways and let the cities die. We need more Detoilets. Let the Africans turn once vibrant cities into little Wakandas everywhere.
Pssst! Wakanda is a myth.
The fact that this is even being considered shows just how far this country has sunk.
California is fighting Lightning Complex fires. Minneapolis, Seattle, Portland, and Kenosha, are fighting Darkning Complex fires. Both start suddenly, and spread rapidly through an excess of undergrowth.
I’d like to know who in the hell is going to step up and stop these animals from tearing our country apart? The BLM bunch needs to be dealt with in a violent way. Time to get tough with these A-holes. They need to be crushed.
You remember growing up in STL in the sixties. You in Webster Groves and me in Kirkwood. I remember the construction of now what is known as I 270 around the outside of the St Louis city limits. Right through the suburbs. It was basically built in all white neighborhoods. Go down to Lake of the Ozarks. They finished Highway 54 and now it is 4 lanes and by-passes most of the old businesses. That is a majority white area. Ruined many businesses. My heart pumps peanut butter and jelly for them.
Don’t forget I-44 which runs through the middle of Webster Groves, and parts of Kirkwood and Oakland, right through white neighborhoods. I remember my parents worrying about it cutting off our path to the high school. No problem. Since it followed the railroad tracks there were already bridges (Edgar Road) and underpasses (Elm Road) and the only road cut off (Selma) has a pedestrian overpass. It did cut off part of The Hill in he city but the Italians did OK. It’s only when Africans are impacted that there is pissing and moaning and screams of racism.
Denver’s I-25 (built in 1957 as the Valley Hwy.) does not go through the Five Points black neighborhood. The SE portion was built right through a white middle-class neighborhood.
The New Orleans levees are racist, a symbol of white supremacy. I think they should all be demo’d, With HE in the middle of the night, without warning.
Yannow, people like Amy Stelly are motivated with white hatred, pure and simple. There is no other logical reason that they would want to preserve the black neighborhood they had 50 years ago, especially since they piss and moan as if race relations are still stuck at the same 50 years ago. Her goal should have been to become upwardly mobile and move to a nicer neighborhood and use the expressway to see what she was able to escape. We have a black family across the street with three children in our neighborhood, a safe place to live, with parks, lakes, fishing, and wonderful social activities for only $200 dues per year. This is what Amy Stelly should have done for her family.
How are they going to evacuate the city when another Katrina comes through?
Not by 200 parked school buses. (Nagin)
What business would not want to be close to the expressway? She said she wanted to restore a “commercial corridor”, but that expressway is not what destroyed it. Crime is what destroyed it. That road goes thru many very prosperous neighborhoods right down the road. It’s the same story everywhere. Take an interstate drive thru a high crime inner city and there is no reason to stop to shop. Take the same interstate to the suburbs and you see booming commercial real estate surrounded by upscale housing. People who see everything as racist could not pour piss out of their boot if the directions were written on the heel.
Exactly! That’s what happened with I-285 around Atlanta. At one time there was talk of another bypass further out since I-285 is packed with cars. The libs put a kibosh on it because of “sprawl”. They didn’t want to see businesses growing up alongside the new bypass. It’s a shame because the new bypass would have alleviated a lot of the traffic problems in Atlanta. But the Kung Flu seems to be taking care of that.
Sure bitch you have roads to use, money will get spent to fix the racist road. Only for folks to bitch access was taken to keep the blacks in their community.
